Weaving is something has started since Byzantine times in Cappadocia region. But the carpets that we see as “traditional carpets” are started in 1700’s in Urgup and Avanos and rugs are started in Gulsehir and Kozaklı.
In the last period of Ottoman Empire, British peoples had the whole control of production of carpets in Cappadocia region. After the tourism sector’s growth in 1960s, local peoples started to sell their own products again. Handmade carpets are still exist today but traditional Anatolian patterns has changed to patterns that tourists liked.
