Pottery making is known to be an ancient art and in this area it keep continued till today and its common since the Hittites (1800 BC). Pottery is widespreaded in the area because of the river Kizilirmak has incredibly suitable clay for pottery making. The district in Cappadocia named Avanos is pretty famous for its Potteries and you also can take a workshop and try to making pottery by yourself in Avanos.

POTTERY MAKING
Generally pottery making process starting with colecting soft and greasy clay from the Avanos mountins and Kizilirmak river delta, then mixed with water and make it becoma a dough. After that, this dough needs to rest for a week in wheel or mold shape, commonly used and traditional way is making it like a wheel and then the Potter place the dough on the Wheel and holding it in between of her/his legs while allowing the wheel spin quickly. During this movement, the Potter needs to shape the dough in a way they desire. In old times Hittites made wine pots with a hole in the middle. They were filling these cups with wine and placing it the highest peak around themselves to show their respect to the Sun God.
